Accelerating the energy transition and innovating IT to be more sustainable

The Mercuria Hackathons

We need your help innovating to create sustainable solutions and accelerate the energy transition.

The Mercuria Hackathons are a series of weekend events around the world where interdisciplinary teams come together to create innovative software development solutions that solve big energy transition challenges whilst using fewer physical resources and energy more efficiently.

Our inaugural Mercuria Hackathon took place in Switzerland in December 2022. Fifty people from across Europe met at the Swiss Alpine resort of Villars-sur-Ollon to learn about the carbon intensity of the shipping sector and create real solutions which could form the foundation for innovative change in the shipping industry.

Then in the summer of 2023, we held our second Mercuria Hackathon, this time in the United States. We selected 50 students and graduates from all across the USA to join us in Austin, Texas to hack the problem of the reliability of the ERCOT power network.

Read more about these events and see what you could be a part of, by registering your interest for our future hackathons.

Following our first two hackathons in 2022 and 2023, we will be running hackathons in new locations during 2024 and 2025. You could be joining up to 50 fellow participants for a free weekend stay for some hard work, an amazing networking opportunity and great fun.

Mercuria is committed to driving the energy transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy. This is an opportunity for you to take part in that commitment as you help us to innovate our IT to be more sustainable, taking advantage of green software standards.

How to get involved…

First. The challenges are technical in nature, so we are looking for participants that are good at problem solving and ideally have a background in information technology – whether that be programming, data science, devops or UI/UX. You could be as an undergraduate or PhD student still at university, a recent graduate or someone that has started their career and has real world experience. We are looking for a range of people from a diverse set of backgrounds and locations to get involved in each event.

Second. If you are interested in taking part in one of the hackathons and are based in the USA, the Middle East, Asia or Europe, please register your interest by filling in our form.

Third. Once we have finalised the location, the date and the challenge for each future hackathon, we will be in contact to see if you want to take part and open up the application process.

Fourth. We will be selecting a diverse mix of up to 50 participants to take part in each event and will let people know if they have been selected prior to each event taking place.

What have previous participants had to say?
